Kalighat-TMC's 3-member delegation reaches Baruipur amid unrest over teen rape-murder case

Kalighat-TMC's three-member delegation reached Baruipur on Monday amid continuing unrest over the alleged rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl. The girl's body was recovered from a pond in South 24 Parganas, after which her family alleged that she had been raped and murdered. Police registered a case of murder under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case. Two people have been arrested, including Prabhash Mondol, while several others are being questioned. Police also confirmed that a man suspected of involvement in the crime was lynched. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Baruipur, Sonarpur, and Narendrapur, and additional police forces have been deployed.

A senior police officer said a murder case has been registered, the SIT has begun its investigation, and raids are underway to arrest the remaining accused. Police appealed to the public not to pay attention to rumours. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari spoke to the victim's father over the phone and said an SIT had been constituted, two people had been arrested, and three others had been detained. He stated that four cases had been registered, including the murder case and cases related to subsequent violence.

Mamata Banerjee criticised the government through a social media statement, alleging that police and central forces prevented her from visiting the victim's family despite her plan to travel alone. Jadavpur MP Sayoni Ghosh condemned the incident, stated that she had spoken with the Chief Minister, and said he had assured that arrests were being made, the SIT was monitoring the investigation, and action would be taken against those responsible. She also stated that the rule of law must prevail and that taking the law into one's own hands was unacceptable.
